Sprout!
Hello again
21:42

Well hello there my friend! It’s been about 14 months since my last communication, and I can’t tell you how good it feels to be back. I thought about you every single day...and that’s no exaggeration.

If this is your first time here...WELCOME! I'm beyond delighted to have you.

So where did I run off to? What’s my excuse for this year-long communication blackout?

I really have the COVID-19 lockdown to blame...or I should say thank, for this temporary departure. When the world was collectively sent to its room at the hands of a virus, I was forced to get real with myself.

Yes, the world had to shut down so that I could stop screwing around and show up for my life...and for you.

You don’t know this about me, but I’m super-skilled at hiding any shred of evidence that I don’t know where the hell I’m going in life.

Now you may be thinking: What are you talking about Mel? You earned a degree in Dietetics, wrote
Missing Peace, presented to groups large and small, provided nutrition counseling to countless individuals for over 20 years, and serve as the dietitian for Heinen’s Grocery Store! That sounds pretty accomplished to me!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of these accomplishments and regret nothing. But the truth is, I spent a lot of time and energy holding back when it came to
really putting myself out there.

Why?

Fear!

Fear of criticism.

Fear of failure.

Fear of turning people off and the inner jab that comes with discovering one of my precious newsletter subscribers “unsubscribed”.

Fear of the “good opinion of others”.

Can you relate?

Fear is a funny thing

Fear is a funny thing isn’t it? It can stop you dead in your tracks on your path to accomplishing great things. Its aim is to keep you scared and small, no matter how noble the cause.

Fear doesn’t compromise...unless it’s met with a red-hot burning desire.

Even though fear was lurking within me, there was something about the worldwide lockdown that gave me the courage to listen to and answer, that still small voice within.

The question that kept coming up was:
What can I offer the world that will really make a difference, and how can I offer it?

But the answer didn’t come so easily. Instead, I kept hearing:
First you must remove the filter Mel.

Ha! Isn’t it wonderful when you call yourself out on your own BS? And that’s exactly what I did. I made a pact with myself that whatever I chose to offer the world, I had to stay true to myself, from start to finish. In every program I put out there, recipe I offer, and blog post I write, the filter must be off.

This required me to do some serious soul-searching.

I took myself back to 1998, when I was suffering from binge eating disorder, feeling frightened, alone, and out of control. When I:

  • Craved junk food like some folks crave cigarettes.
  • Thought about food night and day and counted the minutes until my next sugar fix, in the form of a donut, candy, or frosting-laden cake.
  • Couldn’t get a handle on my eating habits, no matter how hard I tried.

I asked myself, what it was I neededand would have given my right arm for to conquer those wicked binges that always brought me to my knees. What is the one thing that could’ve relieved my suffering?

The answer I received was this:

I needed to be reminded of my true identity, of who stood by and within me. I was never alone. Never have been, and never will be.

If you only knew...fear would be impossible

A Course in Miracles states: If you knew Who walks beside you on the way that you have chosen, fear and doubt would be impossible.

It is so clear to me now, that during my darkest hours, I was trying to do it alone. I was pushing God aside.

At this point in my soul-searching, I got a little irritated with myself.

Why am I hiding that which was responsible for my healing from binge eating disorder over 21 years ago?

Why am I not giving public credit to the loving Light that peered through the crack on my darkest days...and continues to do so today?

Why am I not sharing my experience of this benevolent Force that takes over and breathes calm into my anxiety-filled body whenever I ask for help and then...surrender to that Help?

And furthermore, why am I dancing around the word ‘God’ in fear that I might offend someone? Enough already! You must remove the filter Mel.

And so it is.

Welcome to Sprout, my brand-spanking new website!

Sprout is more than a website really, it’s a place you can come to:

  • Feel safe and free. (You won’t find any diets or lists of forbidden foods here!)
  • Be reminded of who you really are.
  • Understand how to nourish your body with the foods nature intended.
  • Discover how to make peace with your food, body, and health
  • Learn how to open yourself up to the inspiration that is already inside of you.

Speaking of inspiration, did you know its true meaning comes from the Greek word theopneustos, which translates into ‘God-breathed’.

So, when you are inspired to do something big or small (like taking that first step to improve your health), that spark is God breathing into you, giving you the fuel necessary to bring that burning desire to life.

Your seed of well-being

Imagine a tiny heart planted inside a soil-filled pot. Inside the heart is a tiny seed which represents the object of your burning desire, waiting to sprout. Since the focus of this site is well-being, I refer to this seed as your “seed of well-being.”

OK, now what about the pot?

The pot symbolizes your body, what I like to refer to as a living, breathing temple. It's the human side of you. The heart planted inside, is your
being side.

Yes, we are both human and being. Some call this being side soul. I used to call it the "higher" self.

Today, I refer to it as the True You.

Do you know who you really are?

Your being side is an extension of God, the source of all gifts: inspiration, peace, well-being, joy, strength...and let’s not forget, the source of your burning desires.

Like an acorn from the great oak, you are directly connected to it. And if you come from it, does it not make sense that all of these gifts are available to you too? Of course! Because at one point or another, you experienced these things in your life, didn’t you?

Does it not then stand to reason that you are endowed with all of the power to sprout your seed of well-being and bring it to life? Like healthy blood sugar, more energy, a healthy relationship with food? After all, the acorn has the oak tree contained within it...does it not?

Moses writes in Genesis 1:26 that man is created in God’s “image” and “likeness”.

That means you!

No one is exempt.

Do you realize how powerful you are? (probably not!)

My friend, I don’t think you realize the tremendous power that lies within you.

In fact, now hold onto your seat...

The very fact that you are able to experience the burning desire for better health in the first place, and the fact that it won’t go away no matter what, means the end result of that desire exists in you...waiting to bloom, waiting to be born.

It’s already complete.

It’s already given.

Matthew 7:7 says:
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

You must do your part

Like any seed, your seed of well-being must be nurtured into existence. You must do your part.

The only thing keeping your seed of well-being from sprouting, and inspiration from flowing, is a case of temporary amnesia...forgetting who you really are.

This (and only this) is why you fell off last time.

It’s like this: you’re standing at the door, with a burning desire for better health and on the other side of that door is everything you will ever need to make that desire a reality...but you aren’t knocking because you’re too busy focusing on everything that’s going “wrong” in your life.

It’s time to flip the switch and shift your perception!

What if:

  • Illness is really wellness asleep?
  • Emotional food cravings are harmony in hibernation?
  • Sadness is nothing more than dormant joy?

Well-being is inevitable...when you allow it

What if you could find a way to tap into the God-given gift of inspiration on demand, whenever you needed it? Think about that for a second. How far do you think you could go with a continual stream of inspiration? Imagine the level of well-being you could achieve!

Not only is it possible, it’s inevitable… but only when you
allow it to flow through you.

Through this new website, I will offer you tools and programs to ignite the inspiration that’s already inside, so that you may experience more joy, abundant energy, a peaceful relationship with your body and food, and above all, good health.

The secret back door

How you enter into this journey makes all the difference. Do you use the popular front door labeled "human", or the secret back door of "being".

It's all a matter of allowing.

Allowing God to flow through you.

I know you inherently know this, but the truth is, God has been by and within you your entire life. If you're anything like me, you've probably gotten in the habit of forgetting who you really are. This is the source of all your so-called "problems".

And yes, this includes your eating habits.

Don't you think it's time you put an end to fruitless chase after well-being? It's already inside of you, so stop trying to do this alone!

Allow the light of God to shine within you.

The risk I’m willing to take

Of course the birth of this new site means some people, perhaps even you, will choose to unsubscribe from my emails. And you know what? I honor that. After all, I’m not for everyone. Nor am I trying to be.

I’m now strong enough to not take it personally. In fact, we all must protect our time and energy. Think of it like a buffet: tons of options, but only one plate. You can’t possibly fill it with every food; you have to choose what suits you.

If something intuitively feels right, that’s your cue that it’s
right for you. And if it’s not, I am certain if you continue exploring with an open heart, you will find what you’re searching for.

For those who choose to stay, I offer my unshakeable promise to give you the best of me.

100% unfiltered.

With so much love and light,

Mel
